Navigo transportation cards on the Paris subway

Optimizing passenger flows across the Paris subway network.

The challenge

Every day in 2013, 8.3 million users traveled on public transport in the Paris region. Optimizing this immense flow of passengers and ensuring its fluidity is a high priority for RATP, the public transport body.

The solution

Implementing Navigo contactless passes in 2001 contributed significantly to meeting this objective. Supplied at various service points known as “Club Counters”, as well as points of sale distributed throughout the RATP network, they are personalized in an instant using Evolis card printers.

Specifically, for each Navigo pass:

  • User data is stored in the RATP IT system
  • The customer’s photo is taken on site
  • The contactless RFID chip is encoded, and the card graphically personalized using an Evolis Pebble or an Evolis Zenius printer…

… all in just a few minutes!

The result

In ten years, millions of Navigo transport tickets have been produced. Once again, Evolis printers have demonstrated their reliability and their rapid printing.

We chose Evolis because the Pebble and Zenius printers are the perfect match for our criteria: easy to use, efficient, and reliable. What’s more, when we decided to move to a Linux environment, Evolis supported us and developed a compatible printer driver.
